Freakin’ Weekend: 10.9-10.11
Unlike last weekend’s shit show of decision making, this weekend should be a little easier to navigate. But, just because we’re coming into the meat of the academic period, doesn’t mean that anyone should be skipping out on some of the big shows coming up this month. We’ve already had some pretty huge ones this month, but this weekend really kicks it off and it doesn’t let up until fall is done. It is National Arts & Humanities Month, after all, so what better way to celebrate than by taking in some great shows? I won’t blame you, however, should you choose to spend your time with the baseball postseason as the League Championship Series’ kick off tonight and tomorrow night. At the very least, unlike last year, you won’t have to share it with this douchebag.
Thursday
Silver Jews w. The Mattoid / Picador / 9pm
With the Picador website down still, I’m not sure what the official price tag on this show is, but you really ought to take the opportunity to see one of America’s finest songwriters. Dave Berman never played live until recently, but especially considering that this October marks the 10 year anniversary of his classic record American Water, you’re probably going to want to check this out.
Friday
The Envy Corps w. The Silent Years / Picador / 9pm
The Envy Corps last show in Iowa City was canceled due to flooding, so it’s been extra long since they’ve dropped into town. This is one of those bands that manages to get better every time I see them. They manage to sound like the good of Coldplay, early Radiohead, and themselves at the same time. Arena-sized spacious Brit-rock. From some dudes from Ames. Holler.
Saturday
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone w. Ill Ease / Public Space ONE / 9pm / $5
Okay, if you’ve been wondering what this PS1 shit is all about, then wait no longer and just come check out Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. If you missed him at the Mill in April, then now’s your chance. CftPA always puts on a brilliant, funny, and confessional show and the man is all kinds of prolific. Ill Ease, Gangi, and Rainbow Arabia open. PS1 is in the basement of the Jefferson Building.
