New Music: Native – Ponyboy
As if this weekend wasn’t packed enough with music, Birth Rites main bros Native (not to be confused with Our Brother the Native or Local Natives) will be rocking PS1 on Sunday night with some ramshackle math rock tunes. Native have completed their debut record, Wrestling Moves, which comes out in late August via Sargent House. You can download “Ponyboy,” from the forthcoming album, below. It’s a loose tune that borders on disaffected emo – not the over-the-top kind, but full of distant, angular guitars and scream-sung vocals. And judging from those Myspace pics, there’s going to be plenty of body thrashing and ear pummeling going on. Plus, any friend of Birth Rites is a friend of ours. Rounding out this bill will be rising Iowa City punks These Needles, Bad Words, and Dan Davis. Not sure what Davis’ solo material is gonna be like, but judging from Native’s discordant guitars, if his stuff is anything like his heavy material with Be Kind, it’s gonna be a perfect match.
