In her short stead in Iowa City, Fflur Dafydd has already made some pretty impressive rounds: a reading at Prairie Lights, a reading at Shambaugh House, and a performance at The Mill. For once saying the girl gets around is a compliment. Granted, as a writer in residence with Iowa’s International Writing Program, Dafydd is afforded more opportunities than a mere tourist to make waves and be involved in public events. And she’s not done making her presence known. The novelist, critic, lecturer, singer/songwriter is slated for an in-studio appearance with yours truly on KRUI this evening from 5-6 pm and then a show at Public Space ONE with other literary minded troubadours.
Dafydd’s recorded output vacillates between the pop-genius sheen of Steely Dan and the jazzy finger picked styles of John Mayer. Look for folk swing to figure heavily in her set, cause her band is in Wales (guys, maybe you want to be critically acclaimed writers and you can travel with her).
Alex Dezen, currently taking part of in Iowa’s oft-lauded Writers’ Workshop and formerly the singer/songwriter behind The Damnwells is also on board. Nerissa Campbell joins Dafydd again after co-headlining the show at The Mill last week. Correction: Maryssa Handler another Writers’ Workshopper is on the bill. And because that just isn’t enough, Lauren Haldeman of Coyote Blood and her accordion are going to make some rustic noise. I’m feeling a sudden eruption of “Let The Circle Be Unbroken” at this show (might have to teach that one to Fflur).
