Freakin’ Weekend: 11.5-11.7
This is a seriously great weekend of live music in Iowa City. Get out and enjoy what IC has to offer between tailgating and Iowa getting yet another win (in the fourth quarter…again). Anyone else think Lipitor is sponsoring the Hawkeye’s season.
Thursday
Pelican w. Black Cobra and Struck By Lightning / The Picador / 10 pm / $10
Chicago instrumental giants Pelican just put out their fourth full-length studio album, What We All Come to Need, last week and tonight they’re hitting up The Picador. Dudes are on the brutally awesome Southern Lord Records now, and might have put out the perfect synthesis of their influences.
Friday
Simon Joyner (performing with members of Bright Eyes, Lambchop, and Capgun Coup) / The Mill / 9 pm / $7
Considered one of the fathers of Omaha’s fertile indie-folk scene, Simon Joyner also bears the distinction of being one of two (the other was Bob Dylan) artists who’ve had an album playing in its entirety by famed British DJ John Peel. Friday night he celebrates the release of his latest album Lost With the Lights On.
