Freakin’ Weekend: 12.17-12.19

Snoop Dogg - Landy & Egg Nog_Front CoverWho knew there was a market for holiday themed hip hop mix tapes? More here (that’s not the holiday spirit, Tony!).

In other news, it’s our last Freakin’ Weekend of 2009! I’m going to use this as an opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday break, and let you know that we’ll be returning next week with our favorite albums of 2009. Coverage of our music scene here in town will largely cease until we return with New Years Eve coverage. We’re looking forward to another great year of music in 2010. Be safe and happy holidays!

Thursday
Two floor Physical Challenge / Picador / All night / FREE
It’s kind of a slow night in town, but you know things are going to be blowing up at the final Physical Challenge of the semester at the Picador. Both floors are open, with some certifiably great local DJs blowing up both floors: Polynation and the School of Flyentology will be downstairs, and Coolzey and DJ Tutt will be rocking it upstairs.

Friday
The Gglitch with Clean Livin’ / Yacht Club / 9pm / $6
I had thought this would be a shout out to the free Shame Train show at the Mill, but then I realized that the Gglitch were playing the Yacht Club, and that’s something that doesn’t happen too often. The story of the Gglitch is one of overcoming, and this should be a great big ol’ party. If you haven’t seen them before, they’re an Iowa City staple. Clean Livin’ opens.
However, should you stop by the Mill (it’s free!), make sure to say happy birthday to Sam Knutson.

Saturday
Make your own fun / Wherever / Whenever / Free
Truth be told, for the final Saturday night after finals and before break, you may just want to do whatever. I don’t blame you. There’s not a lot going on tonight, so just do your thing: going away parties are plentiful, or you just might need to spend the day doing holiday shopping and then stay in by the fire (you could be so lucky to have a fireplace). Check back next week for Mission Freak’s Year End coverage!

Download the Snoop mixtape here, if you dare. No idea how long that link will be live for. Disclaimer: I haven’t listened to this, and am not recommending it. Just pointing it out, in the event that you’re interested in holiday themed hip hop.
