Freakin’ New Years Eve!
Better late than never! Probably should’ve run this post a couple days ago to give you more than a couple of hours to ruminate on all the great stuff our town is offering tonight for your festivities, but we’ve been taking a little holiday break. So, here’s a quick rundown of musical events at all of the venues in town and here’s to kicking the decade in the ass on it’s way out the door. Happy 2K10!
Picador
Two-floor Physical Challenge
We gladly welcome the Picador back from a little holiday break of its own with two floors of dance madness. Downstairs features some classic soul and funk records being spun on wax, whereas upstairs will cater more to the kids with bangers all night courtesy of Mikko, DJ Tutt. Doors are at 8pm (10pm for upstairs), $3 gets you into both floors.
Mill
Illinois John Fever, Liberty Leg, Hott
A memorable night of dirty roots rock at the Mill, just the way it should be. If you’ve been reading this space, you know that we’ve loved Illinois John Fever since the day they were born. Tonight is their record release party. Liberty Leg, who have their own new album out, join, as well as veritable local supergroup Hott. Doors at 9pm, cover is $6.
Yacht Club
Dead Larry, 5 In a Hand, Insectoid
With three of the Yacht Club’s biggest bands taking to the Englert tonight (see below), look for tonight to be the ascendancy of Dead Larry to perhaps Iowa City’s biggest band in the jam/groove scene. They’ll headline this eclectic band along with 5 In a Hand, and perennial mind-fuck Insectoid. $10 gets you in starting at 8pm, complete with contact high.
Englert
Euforquestra, Public Property, Uniphonics
I suspect that if you’re going to this show, you already have your tickets, but it isn’t sold out as of this writing, so you can still make it down for the last PP show before they go on hiatus. With Euforquestra having moved on to Colorado, this is a local reunion for them and some of their best buds. Three of Iowa City’s most well known bands are all sharing the big stage for what’s being called “Public Euforia.” Tickets are $25 for this 7pm show.
White Lightning
Who the fuck knows
We know from a cryptic Facebook invite that Brendan O’Keefe and Jeff Witscher are going to be doing some dirty DJing tonight at the warehouse. I have no idea what else is going to be going on there, but if you want a place to do everything that can’t be done at the above places, from drugs to throwing knives, then this has got to be your place. Show up whenever, if you know what’s what. BYOB.
