Preview: Monadnoc

monadnocWe haven’t really “announced” this yet, but we’re tipping our hand; Mission Freak is going to be working with longtime Iowa City resident (currently based in Chicago) Monadnoc to put out his new record, Olive Oil and Indian Blood . You can get a glimpse of these songs at tonight’s Tuesday Night Social Club, where Monadnoc will play songs arranged with help from Skye Carrasco, Olivia Rose Muzzy, and Adam Havlin. The record itself isn’t coming out until March, but I can tell you this: it is spectacular. Dusty sung-spoke stories swirl around you amidst sparse arrangements. It’s a record that makes you feel like you haven’t been home for days, sitting around a fire with some folks you don’t know too well weaving tales. It could easily be the film soundtrack to a Cormac McCarthy novel, a little bit Gothic and a little bit tense. Tonight Monadnoc will be joined by some of the musicians who helped him make this record, which was produced by Paleo and recorded by Patrick Stolley in Davenport this fall. Olivia and Skye will also perform solo sets to open up the show. Best of all, it’s free!
