Freakin’ Weekend: 1.28-1.30

Finally revealing one of the worst kept secrets in it’s brief, yet momentous history, Apple CEO Stephen Jobs unveiled the poorly titled and bizarre looking iPad on Wednesday. The cheapest model starts at $499 and from what I can tell it’s basically just a big Kindle. So maybe we’re heading in the right direction on the digital reader front, but I can’t help but feel that I’m not alone in Yawning at this over-sized iPhone. Well, if you’re as bored as I am with the idea, and so poor that the idea of dropping that kind of money on anything is pretty much unthinkable, then there are several happenings this weekend in Iowa City which are considerably cheaper and probably more enjoyable.

Thursday
Birth Rites w. Grand Tetons and Horsepital / The Picador / 10pm / FREE
Birth Rites rock Iowa City ONE more time before their skin-pounder, Gregory Markus heads abroad for a spell. Because this is an extension of The Picador’s weekly dance party, this thing goes down for free. Grand Tetons and the amazingly named Horsepital open.

Friday
Samuel Locke-Ward and Kate Kane / Java House / 8 pm / Free
Keeping with the trend of booking non conventional coffee house fare the Java House will host Iowa City’s king of demented pop, Samuel Locke-Ward. Along for the ride is Lipstick Homicide’s axe-wielder Kate Kane. I can’t really say what her solo act is going to be, but put good money on acoustic renditions of power-pop anthems. Afterward you can catch Heatbox at the Yacht Club, see In Defense rock The Picador,  or see The New Duncan Imperials take the stage at the Mill.

Saturday
Eyes w. Tiny Concept and Living Ghost / White Lightning Warehouse / 9 pm / Donations
Eyes, who split their time between East Moline and Chicago, make an indescribable racket: Sometimes scronked-out electro-pop sometimes restrained lo-fi slow-jamz. Tiny Concept is a little elusive. Apparently Tiny Concept is a French woman named Leticia. Wherever she’s from one thing’s for sure: she writes spare, stripped-down Velvet-style dirges. Dan Davis’ Living Ghost project opens.
