Preview: The Daredevil Christopher Wright

daredevil christopher wright The Daredevil Christopher Wright will likely be one of those surprising new finds for many Mission Creek attendees this year. Driving but a handful of hours to Iowa City from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the band has an enlightened sound without the frills of familiarity.

Perhaps that last statement is false. The Daredevil Christopher Wright became a bit of a Who’s Who in the months following the release of its full-length debut, In Deference To A Broken Back (Amble Down), in May 2009. The Midwest group was touted on Daytrotter and even made Paste Magazine’s “Band of the Week” last May. Long before that, the group managed a small write-up on NPR. Perhaps their fellow Eau Claire resident and friend can be thanked for the attention; Justin Vernon of Bon Iver mixed the album.

The band consists of brothers Jason and Jon Sunde and Jesse Edgington. Their recorded tales include the typical indie pop rhythmic waves, background clapping, lyrics on love, group sing alongs, story-based lyrics, and a weeping violin (among a large assortment of other instruments). The upbeat songs range from a hint of Nick Drake with a slightly stronger taste of Belle & Sebastian in “Stewardess”, to Of Montreal in “A Conversation About Cancer”.

Talks about cancer aside, you can expect a lighthearted evening at The Mill on March 31, when The Daredevil Christopher Wright plays with Brighton, MA, Sarah Mannix & the Wandering Bears, and The New Bodies.
