Mission Creek 2010 Festival Preview: Hood Internet
The Hood Internet are a 2000s curiosity, something that could only have gained “mainstream” recognition in that decade of piracy, mash-ups, and instant aquirability (matched with equal disposability). If you don’t know: the Hood Internet are a couple dudes from Chicago who have brains that play musical Tetris. They fit songs together so seamlessly, and have doing so since 2007, when they founded their blog, The Hood Internet. The recipe for a great Hood Internet song generally features one popular rap or R&B song, one popular indie rock song, and a pinch of irony. See their classic R. Kelly/Broken Social Scene mash-up below for the proof. Along the way, they’ve made mixtapes as well as daily mp3 offerings.
So yes, in a weird way, the Hood Internet is a DJ duo and a blog, making it even more emblematic of the 2000s. The duo, composed of Aaron Brink and Steve Reidell, recently brought the decade some closure by kicking off our friends Cokemachineglow‘s Decade Fantasy Covers Podcast. Basically, CMG’s offering a streamable mix of notable 00s songs covered by lesser known 00s artists. Hood Internet kicks it off with six minutes of mash-up dedicated to each year of the 00s. It’s pretty great.
And finally, Steve’s been taking the act to the road in recent years, which you may remember from some pretty packed dance parties going down at the Yacht Club during Mission Creek 08 and 09. This year, the tradition continues, as the Hood Internet will once again be the Thursday night source for dancing your ass off. Of course, this year’s going to be bigger and better than year’s past, so all stops are being pulled out: the Hood Internet will be opening for legendary Public Enemy production team the Bomb Squad.
