Freakin’ Weekend: 02.25-02.27

picadorStill awaiting official word on the saga of the Picador. What we know so far is this: the Picador has been sold, will undergo a management change, and revert to the name Gabe’s. According to Facebook, the Pic closes tonight with a bang, one last massive early metal/hardcore show and then a final Physical Challenge blowout. Things we don’t know: who bought the place, how long it’ll be closed, and what kind of changes are going to be made. And while this isn’t intended to start any rumors, for those who initially disapprove of the transaction, we can only hope for the best out of it. After all, the Picador has been openly struggling to put people through the doors and secure quality talent for shows. So, if we trust the idea that the club is going to reopen as Gabe’s and continue being a rock club, we have to at least assume that this will be a good thing, right? Whoever bought the place has to have faith that they can do well in the space. Although, no word yet on who owns it. I’m naively assuming that it has to be someone more local than the previous owners (operating out of Lawrence), but if I’m wrong then maybe it won’t make a difference. That being said, to the Picador: we’ll miss you. There were a lot of great memories from a lot of great shows while you were open. Here’s hoping we can all making something positive out of this switch.

Thursday
Driphouse, Rene Hell, Caboladies, Lwa, Chouser / White Lightning / 9pm / Donate
Yes, you should stop by and have a drink tonight at the Picador to reminisce on some good times. But I’ve never been a huge Physical Challenge proponent, and the real goods are here at the Warehouse, with an out music show headlined by Driphouse, AKA Daren Ho, formerly of Iowa City.

Friday
Trampled by Turtles and the Boomchuks / Yacht Club / 9pm / $10
Back in October I saw the Avett Brothers at the Englert, and a friend of mine who used to cook at the Mill told me that if I liked the Avetts, I had to get down with Trampled by Turtles. Coincidentally, not more than a month later the Yacht Club had announced this show. And it’s true: if you like the Avett Bros, you have to like these guys. They’re kindred spirits.

Saturday
Death Ships, Olivia Rose Muzzy, Datagun, the Vagabonds / Mill / 9pm / $6
Another former Iowa City resident comes home in the form of Dan Maloney, captain of Death Ships. Stop in to the Mill to find out what they’ve been up to, and check out a trio of great local talent opening up.
