Mission Creek Festival Preview: Camera Obscura

Care of, once again, Brian Johannesen.

It is upon us! This marvelous week of nonstop music and literature has arrived and while most of you have your sights set on shows early in the week, it can’t hurt to plan ahead. Saturday offers tons of killer shows to check out, and Camera Obscura will be headlining one of them at the Blue Moose Tap House.

If you are bummed about not being able to afford a ticket to Greg Brown, Camera Obscura presents an excellent alternative. Although they have more of a modern indie vibe than Greg Brown, their music shows an appreciation for folk. Mesmerizing guitar slides and atmospheric effects all drone on behind the soft vocals of Tracyanne Campbell. The sound is reminiscent of a less poppy, but still indie as fuck, She and Him.

Camera Obscura’s fourth and latest album, My Maudlin Career, earned the Scotland natives some killer recognition here in the United States. They have since been getting booked at major festivals, including Coachella and Sasquatch this year. The recognition is not undeserved. They have been touring relentlessly all over the globe and working hard to develop the reputation they have made for themselves. Their catchy, danceable music will make a great Saturday evening for anyone who enjoys great indie music with cute female vocalists.

Oh yeah, and the Blue Moose has a smoke machine and a bomb ass light show… As if the music itself wasn’t enough incentive.
