Captured! By Robots: Robots Takeover Music, Enslave Human

When people say that JBOT (Jay Vance) of Captured! By Robots has a screw loose, they mean it literally. Yeah, the man is crazy — he’s been taken over by instrument-equipped robots and forced to tour with their human-hating band for 13 years.

Last night JBOT, the droids, nameless apes and decapitated horn section played The Mill during their “I Don’t Give a Fuck” tour. Though JBOT is supposed to have a Biocerebral Chip in his CPU, he still managed to get incredibly stoned before his performance. He continued to refer to his stoned self as “charming,” but by the end of the night, audience members realized he was forgetting words to songs written and programmed into the bots a decade ago. While the promise of a song entitled “Wesley Crusher, Fuck Off” is exciting, the execution was not as impressive.

Regardless, the show was entertaining for a good hour, and not just for the novelty of the act. JBOT is a somewhat talented musician, especially for a guy with his entrails hanging out of a tattered white tee. Several performed songs were original (including a second Star Trek-devoted ditty), but the bot band also played a string of covers, including Queen’s “We Are the Champions” and “Mr. Roboto” by Styx. With half the audience remaining (intrigue gives way to boredom if not into metal, punk, or vulgar appliances), JBOT formed a conga line to end the night.

What is promised by a guy who carts around his human-hating robots and love-spreading monkeys in a crappy old motor home? The great potential of robot bands in the future! If this crazy, stoned, “balding Jew” can do it, who says Ween won’t add a Drumbot to its tour lineup this season? Just imagine if Keith Moon, Neil Peart, and Animal were robots. Perhaps they are!

While JBOT and the rest of Captured! By Robots provide an interesting take on how music and technology can face plant into each other, I think one audience experience was enough for this gal.
