The Endo Pinner Dream, or The Day My Festival Started in Sincerity
Monday was not the best starting day for me. Mad busyness in my life. I had to get my life into the festival, and I did that on Tuesday.
I started my day checking out PS1. I didn’t get an opportunity to go down there on Monday, so it was nice to get down there on Tuesday. The space looks really rad. KRUI has a booth set up as soon as you walk through the front door, so you can watch DJs do their DJ thing. I was talking to Drew about what was going to happen that day, and it sounded pretty rad. As I would find out later, Skull Defekts and Zomes played a cooperative set later on in the day, which I couldn’t hear because I was in class. I didn’t mind because I knew I would see them later.
As I had to live my regular life as a student, I departed from the festival and went back to work. That, eventually, ended and I got down to the Wherehouse to work on the show for the night. After talking with Taterbug about hanging out with Odd Future at SXSW (I totally trust dude, but if anyone can verify, I’d appreciate it. He said he hung around with Tyler, the Creator.) and him buying a van with a tree growing through it (anyone with a plot should look for him on the streets. He’s not too hard to miss), Chouser went up and ripped it, doing weird synth, post-apocalyptic punk. Joe Pavillion came up after him and ripped through a cool, but brief set. He hit a really hard groove with drum loops and dope samples. I wish he had actually played a little bit longer. The thing that I was psyched to see was Alex Body. I’d seen him as Bongrider (for the record, I loved Bongrider), but never the solo project. He totally rips. I can’t recommend seeing him enough. Loops with crazy reverb-drenched vocals got everyone into the groove. It was just so good. I now know why I had been wanting to see him over the past few months. I hope that he keeps this project going, and keeps the Omnichord alive and well.
After the locals, Zomes came up. Josh noted that anyone could really do it. That’s certainly true on one level, but the main thing is that none of us did; Zomes did it. He did it super well. He just droned out, and hit the zone. Keyboard note hits combined with tape loops. Super simple, but well executed nonetheless. The set went a little long for me, but I did enjoy it quite a bit. After Zomes, Skull Defekts came up on stage and just did their thing. Their sound is very tribal and rhythmic. Daniel Higgs brought an important vocal component that made the show a bit more exciting than if it were just the band on its own. I missed a small part of their set because of the Endo Pinner that I ate from Cheba Hut. Honestly, that place is pretty awesome. I hate the pot theme, but the food is good. Also, be prepared to take a second to eat there as getting a sandwich takes a period of about five minutes.
Their set ended, and we finished up things. The night ended with Andre, Pete and I in the Yacht Club talking shit. If this is going to be the tendency of the festival, I have some fucking awesome times ahead of me.
A.C. over and out.
